Six Nations - Ferris to miss opener for Ireland

Saturday's Six Nations championship will be miss out by Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris in Italy due to knee injury which add further worries to coach Declan Kidney's.

While helping Ulster reach the Heineken Cup quarter-finals last weekend Ferris went through a cartilage injury to his right knee and is suspicious for the February 13 clash against France, the Irish Rugby Football Union said in a statement.

The British and Irish Lion joins fellow backrower Jamie Heaslip and winger Tommy Bowe on the injury list for Saturday's match in Rome.

Alongside Ferris the other players who are set to miss at least two matches include John Hayes, Jerry Flannery, Shane Horgan, Geordon Murphy, Andrew Trimble and Rob Kearney.
