His success in England involved a set-up, like in Dublin was the nature of their loss will not console. 24-8 Irish victory on paper has been rested, but it was more. If the display is too much weight Irish scoreboard, accurately reflect their dominance will.

England knew, or should have known, that their breakdown problems at the French against the first half and first 65 minutes of the game Scotland had given.

Whether the definition of the size of the problem before he went to pitch in Dublin only they know. Something given, and is disappointing, said forewarnings, is that he had failed badly in this area and almost beaten to punch in every contact situation.

England vs Italy Six Nations hottest news

England had a great start to their Six Nations campaign at the Millennium arena last week when beating Wales, while Martin Johnson has been at pains to warn against satisfaction at Twickenham on Saturday.

By rights, this should be a contented match for England after their win in Cardiff, although Italy have got a strong forward pack and ran Ireland tremendously close in Rome last weekend before narrowly losing.

Johnson said: “If Italy come and play their best game and they are tough and their defence is strong, we will be in a game into the last quarter like we were last week. “I have no doubts about that. They don’t grant a lot of points, they are difficult at the breakdown. We are under no illusions.”
